Toddler Bible Lessons – Week 8: David

Day 3: Victory Over Goliath

*There are 3 activities for this day’s lesson. Feel free to choose one or two of the activities OR spread them out over several days! :)

  • Materials:
  • Bible (I like the NirV)
  • Children’s Bible (I used the Jesus Storybook Bible for this lesson)
  • Activity #1: Goliath print-out – tape to a cereal box to stand him up (I found a large box and used that), 5 beanbags or 5 small balls
  • Activity #2: Plastic tub, Various stones – include 5 smooth, round stones, Brown paper sack
  • Activity #3: Play dough OR Baking soda and cornstarch to make play clay *Make play clay ahead of time on stove and let it cool

Day 3: Lesson and Activities

  • Open Bible to 1 Samuel 17:45-46a, 50. Ask if child wants to touch God’s Word. Touch gently. Then, read the verses.

Children’s Bible Reading:

  • Open Jesus Storybook Bible to pages 122-123. Point to Goliath and people.
  • Goliath is big, big, big. The people are small, small, small.
  • Goliath is mean, mean, mean. The people are scared, scared, scared.
  • Pages 124-125: Armor is heavy, heavy, heavy. Stones are smooth, smooth, smooth.
  • Pages 126-127: Goliath is big, big, big. God is bigger, bigger, bigger!
  • Stone goes fast, fast, fast. Turn the page to 128-129. Goliath falls down, down, down! Hooray!

Sing (Tune: Pop! Goes the Weasel) On the hill Goliath stood – dressed in heavy armor. David came with God on his side. DOWN! Went Goliath Hooray! Cheer for God!

Activity #1:

  • Prep: Tape Goliath picture to box. Stand up paper Goliath on table or floor.
  • Throw beanbags or balls to knock him down.
  • Sing above song
  • Speak: Goliath was big, big, big. David was small, small, small. But God is BIG, BIG, BIGGEST!

Activity #2:

  • Prep: Place all the rocks/stones in a plastic tub. I had some that were obviously rough and some that were smooth and round.
  • Find 5 smooth, round stones and collect them in a brown paper sack.
  • Poem to speak while doing stone activities: The battle is the Lord’s – YES! The battle is the Lord’s. His mighty power will help us! The battle is the Lord’s!
  • Song to sing: Gather the smooth stones, gather the smooth stones – 1 2 3 4 5! (2x) See video below for tune.

Activity #3:

  • Make stones out of play dough OR play clay.
  • Play clay recipe: 2 cups Baking Soda, 1 cup Cornstarch, 1 ¼ cup water (stir together over medium heat until mashed potato consistency, place in bowl and cover with a damp cloth until cool, store in plastic bag)

Closing: Psalm 47:6, Sing praises to God, sing praises! God gives us victory over our enemies!
