Toddler Bible Lessons – Week 4: Joseph

Posted by on July 20, 2020

Joseph Day 2: Jealousy

  • Materials:
  • Bible (I like the NirV)
  • Jesus Storybook Bible
  • Green stuffed animal, toy, or puppet to be the “green monster”
  • Toys for the “green monster” to take
  • Painted paper bag coat from yesterday

Day 2: Lesson and Activities

  • Open Bible to Genesis 37:4. Ask if child wants to touch God’s Word. Touch gently. Then, read verse.
  • Katelyn is excited when I bring out her real Bible. During the creation unit we did before this, each week she added an animal sticker to the inside cover of her Bible. She still loves to find each animal and point to them.
  • I’ve incorporated the weekly phrase with the animals as well. For example, this week I start out by point to the text and saying, “Katelyn gives thanks to God. Mommy gives thanks to God. Daddy gives thanks to God.” But then as she points to the different animals I say, “The duck gives thanks to God. The frog gives thanks to God. The turtle gives thanks to God.” It may seems silly, but all of creation does give glory to God, and it’s a fun way to repeat the week’s phrase, applying it to every living thing.

“Let every thing that has breath praise the Lord!” Psalm 150:6

Activity #1:

  • The “green monster” is jealous and takes things away saying, “I want it!”
  • Green monster takes a special toy. Oh, no! It’s the green monster! The green monster is jealous and wants to take things.
  • Green monster takes other random toys. The green monster is jealous.

Sing while the green monster goes around taking things. (Tune: If You’re Happy and You Know It) The green monster comes to take your things – oh, no! The green monster comes to take your things – oh, no! He is jealous, jealous, jealous! And he wants it, wants it, wants it. The green monster comes to take your things – oh, no!

  • Children’s Bible Reading: Look at picture on page 77 of Jesus Storybook Bible.
  • Point to Joseph and his father. See Joseph’s beautiful colorful coat? His daddy loved him and gave him a special gift.
  • Joseph had 11 brothers. Point and count to them. Joseph’s brothers were jealous that they didn’t get a special coat or any special gift.
  • Turn the page. Just like the big green monster, Joseph’s brothers took the beautiful coat away! Oh, no!

Activity #2: The green monster returns and takes decorated brown “coat” from yesterday – oh, no! (He also took her tissue paper coat craft.)

Closing: Ephesians 5:20, Always give thanks to God. Instead of being jealous, we should give thanks to God for what He gives us.

Child-led Exploration: Katelyn seemed intrigued by the green monster – and maybe a little scared, too. But after the lesson was over, she did decide to pick up the monster and try it out on her own hand!
