Day 5: The Passover and Deliverance

*There are 4 activities for this day’s lesson. Feel free to choose one or two of the activities OR spread them out over several days! :)

  • Materials:
  • Bible (I like the NirV)
  • Activity #1: Picture of a cross with a door taped over the cross to “hide” it, Paintbrush, Red paint
  • Activity #2: Piece of paper, Painter’s tape, Paintbrush, Red paint
  • Activity #3: Sticky wall (contact paper taped sticky side out), Painter’s tape, Sharpie, Cotton balls
  • Activity #4: Box with picture of lamb and cross glued to the top – poke holes with a metal skewer all over lamb (for the image I used, please email me at mrs.turnerviolin@gmail.com), q tips cut in half

Day 5: Lesson and Activities: Open Bible to Exodus 12. Ask if child wants to touch God’s Word. Touch gently. Then, “read” the story. The Angel of Death was coming. God told the Israelites to get a perfect lamb as a special gift for Him. God told them to kill the lamb and paint its blood on the doorposts of their house. When God saw the blood, He would pass over the house. The people would all be safe.

Activity #1:

  • Prep: Draw a rectangle on a piece of white paper with a cross inside. Cut out a rectangle the same size and tape it along the left edge to be a door that opens to see the cross. You can decorate it as much or little as you’d like, and have your child help decorate as well!
  • As you tell the story, help child paint red “blood” with paintbrush on the doorposts of the door. Many, many years later, God sent Jesus to the earth. He died on the cross and shed His blood. Just like the blood on the doorposts saved the Israelites, Jesus’s blood on the cross saves us from our sins! Jesus is the door. Through Him, we can be with God! Open the door to see the cross – paint on the cross with red paint for Jesus’ blood that saves us!
  • I had Katelyn sit in her little chair with her paint smock for this entire section of the lesson. I knew that painting 3 lines around the door on the picture would not be enough painting for her (and also she likes to do things her way! ;), so I had another piece of paper taped to her tray for her to free paint while I read the “story” and showed her the cross. In hindsight, I should have also prepped the paper with a tape cross to combine it with Activity #2…

Activity #2: (Alternate painting activity)

  • Prep: Put masking tape on paper in the shape of a cross.
  • Paint on the paper with red paint. When the paint dries, remove the tape to see the cross.

Activity #3:

  • Prep: Tape a piece of contact paper to the wall sticky side out. Draw a lamb with sharpie on the contact paper sticky wall. Draw a cross behind it or near it. (If your contact paper is clear, you can draw the lamb on the non-sticky side before taping it up to the wall. Since the contact paper I have is more opaque, I just drew right on the sticky side with sharpie and it worked just fine.) Jesus is the Lamb of God. He shed His blood on the cross to take away our sins!
  • Place cotton balls on lamb
  • Sing: Jesus, Lamb of God, worthy is Your Name (2x)

Activity #4: (Alternate lamb activity)

  • Prep: Glue/tape lamb and cross picture to to the top of a shoe box. Use a metal skewer to poke holes in the lamb and three holes in the cross. Cut q tips in half so that there are enough to poke through each hole. You can paint 3 of the q tips red for the cross.
  • Present lamb box. Have child stick the q tip halves into the holes for the fluffy lamb’s wool and the red ones in the cross. Jesus is the Lamb of God. He shed His blood on the cross to take away our sins!
  • Sing: Jesus, Lamb of God, worthy is Your Name (2x)

Child-led Exploration: After I showed Katelyn how to poke the q tips in the holes to complete the activity, I let her play with the materials on her own. She explored inside the box and was intrigued to see the q tip sticks poking down on the underside of the lid. She had fun pushing on them to pop them out. She also loved collecting the q tips in her bowl and then dumping them back out again. She might have liked that better than the actual activity! Collecting and dumping is her thing lately!

Closing: 1 Peter 5:7, He cares for you. Jesus died on the cross for your sins. He cares for you!
