Day 2: So Many Fish!

*There are 5 activities for this day’s lesson. Feel free to choose one or two of the activities OR spread them out over several days! :)

  • Materials:
  • Bible (I like the NirV)
  • Children’s Bible (I’m using the Say & Pray Bible)
  • Activity #1: Shaving cream (saved from yesterday), Blue food coloring (saved from yesterday), 2 plastic tubs (saved from yesterday), Toy plastic fish
  • Activity #2: Markers, fish stickers
  • Activity #3: 5 white paper fish, Tin foil, Fingerpaints or colored permanent markers, Hole punch, 5 pieces of yarn/string (~4 inches or can be varying lengths), Paper plate
  • Activity #4: Small plastic tub, Painter’s tape, Pompoms, Toy plastic fish, Tongs
  • Activity #5: Small plastic tub, Large plastic tub, Slotted kitchen spoon, blue food coloring, Optional: Water beads

Day 2: Lesson and Activities:

  • Open Bible to Luke 5:1-7. Ask if child wants to touch God’s Word. Touch gently. Then, read the verses. We added a fish sticker to the inside of her Bible cover (this is something we did when learning about creation).
  • Open Say & Pray Bible. Read story, verse, and prayer. Look at pictures.

Activity #1:

  • Prep: Take lid off tub of shaving cream and water from yesterday. Add seaweed and a bunch of plastic fish (without your child seeing!).
  • The men were out fishing all night long, but they didn’t find any fish! But then Jesus came and told them to go back out, and they found so many fish! Can we find any fish?
  • Dig, scoop, and pour the blue shaving cream – find fish toys.
  • Sing (Tune: The Farmer in the Dell) I’m working with God’s help. I’m working with God’s help. So many fish! So many fish! I’m working with God’s help.

Activity #2:

  • Add fish to the butcher paper river on the floor! Play with boat sailing above the fish.

Activity #3:

  • Prep: Cut out 5 fish shapes (plain white paper) – glue to a piece of tin foil and then cut out. Punch a hole in the top of each fish. Cut 6 pieces of yarn/string (~4 inches or varying in length). Punch 5 holes evenly spaces around paper plate (near the edge) and two holes in the center. Can tie the yarn/string to the paper plate ahead of time (center holes for hanging the mobile, outer holes for hanging the fish down).
  • Have your child paint or color on both sides of the tin foil fish (or can just do one side).
  • Hang the fish on the mobile.
  • Sing (Tune: I Will Make You Fishers of Men) Jesus gave them so many fish, so many fish, so many fish! Jesus gave them so many fish – when they listened and obeyed. When they listened and obeyed, when they listened and obeyed. Jesus gave them so many fish – when they listened and obeyed.

Activity #4:

  • Prep: Place plastic fish in a small plastic tub. Stretch painter’s tape across the top of the tub like a net.
  • Have child use tongs to reach inside the net to pull out the fish.

Activity #5:

  • Prep: Fill one plastic tub with water and mix in a few drops of blue food coloring. Place plastic fish in the water. Set inside larger tub (empty).
  • Alternately: Fill the tub with water beads and the fish.
  • Have child get the fish out of the water with the slotted spoon and place each in the empty tub.

Closing: Mark 1:17, I will show you how to fish for people! Jesus helped the men find so many fish!
